Wharf Facilities & Capacity

For deep draught vessels (maximum arrival draught >10.5m and maximum departure draught > 11.0m) please contact the Harbour Master at the Port of Portland office on (03) 5525 0900 for clarification and guidance on the restrictions applicable to vessels at the various berths. Please use the following information as an indicative guide.


K.S. Anderson Berths (No. 1 & 2 Berths)

K.S. Anderson Berths No. 1 and No. 2 are continuous and have a total combined length of 412m. The Transit sheds on the berths can be used while the ship loaders are in operation.

KSA 1
The minimum depth alongside is 12.5m. No. 1 Berth is 257m long and its apron is 17.5m wide. Immediately behind the apron is No. 1 Transit shed (2530m²) and an open storage space of about 0.5ha. The berth is used primarily for the bulk handling of grain (1400/hr) and woodchips (1200/hr) and can also be used for handling fertiliser, livestock, break-bulk and general cargoes.

Berthing/sailing of deep draught vessels (arrival draught >10.5m and departure draught >11.5m) is dependant on the actual tide, weather conditions and is subject to obtaining prior approval from the Harbour Master, Port of Portland. Additional restrictions may apply for vessels >190m LOA.

NOTE: The maximum draught for berthing vessels loading grain/woodchips at KSA 1 and mineral sands/fertiliser at No.5 is 11.5 metres. Berthing of vessels >225 metres LOA is subject to approval from the Harbour Master, Port of Portland. Vessels must maintain under keel clearance (UKC) of 0.5 metres at all berths at all times.


KSA 2

The minimum depth alongside is 10.6m.This berth is a continuation of No. 1 Berth. The length of the berth is 155m and its apron is 17.5m wide. It is backed by No. 2 Transit shed, (5570m²) and 0.5ha of open storage. No. 2 Berth is primarily used for liquid pitch, sulphuric acid, fertiliser and offshore supply vessels. It can also be used for loading grain and small livestock vessels.

Vessels >150m LOA may be able to berth subject to approval from the Harbour Master, Port of Portland.


No. 5 Berth

The minimum depth alongside is 12.2m. This heavy duty berth is 240m long. It is used for handling mineral sands, fertiliser, livestock, break-bulk and general cargo. It also has the capacity to handle fully integrated container and quarter ramp roll-on roll-off traffic. Its apron is 18.7m wide and is backed by a storage area of 0.9ha. No. 5 Transit Shed (2530m²) is located adjacent to the berth. It also has the capacity to handle containers and roll-on roll-off traffic.

Smelter Berth
The Smelter Berth exclusively services the shipping requirements of the Portland Aluminium Smelter. The minimum depth alongside is 11.8m. The berth is 203m long.

S.L. Patterson Berth
The S.L Patterson Berth is located on the Lee Breakwater, about 357m from the seaward end of the breakwater. The berth is 76m long with a minimum depth alongside of 10.8m. The berth is currently used for fumigating vessels and berthing cruise ships. This berth can also be used as a lay-up berth upon approval by the Harbour Master.
