Safe Systems of Work

A safe system of work is required to be identified and implemented prior to the commencement of any work on the Port.

In identifying a safe system of work, the presence of other users shall be considered. Hazard control shall be implemented to prevent damaging impact to work teams and other users in the vicinity of the activity.

POPL promotes the use of a job safety and environment analysis (JSEA) – or your own hazard ID and control measure as a tool to identify controls that will prevent damaging impact to maintain safety and environmental integrity.

Particular consideration shall be given to:

Line of fire with mooring lines
Mobile equipment movement and traffic control
Visibility and changing weather conditions
Height work and the securing of objects at height

The principal company requesting work at the Port is the responsible party for ensuring a safe system of work is implemented. Work permits are required for some activities and these shall be submitted for approval prior to conduct of work.

Emergency Procedures

An emergency procedures manual is maintained by the Port of Portland Deputy Harbour Master to identify procedure in the event of an emergency. The Port liaises with emergency service agents to develop and evaluate response ability.

Emergency marshalling areas are located by a windsock at the 3 exits to the Port.

Safety in Mulit-User Areas

An Incident Notification Investigation Procedure for Common and Multi-User Areas has been developed to ensure all safety and environment accidents, incidents, plant, equipment and infrastructure damage which occur on common and multi-user areas at the Port of Portland are reported and investigated with a consistent approach.
