Auspine & Port of Portland Celebrate 10 Million Milestone
Leading forest products company, Auspine and the Port of Portland today marked a significant milestone in their relationship – the export of 10 million tonnes of woodchips.
The milestone was reached on Monday, 29 September 2008 with the loading of the woodchip carrier, m.v. Global Explorer, at the Port of Portland.
The Chief Executive Officer of Auspine, Andrew Jakab, and the Chief Executive of the Port of Portland, Scott Paterson, today marked the occasion with a ceremony at the port.
Japanese trading house, Marubeni, which purchase the woodchips from Auspine, also participated in the ceremony.
Mr Jakab said Auspine’s ability to develop export markets was dependent on reliable, efficient supply chains.
“Our relationship with the Port of Portland has been a productive one for many years and the port has been an essential gateway to our export markets in Japan,” said Mr Jakab.
Mr Paterson said the port handled around 3.5 million tonnes of cargo per annum and woodchips were the largest single export commodity.
“Auspine’s 10 million tonnes is a very significant milestone and is a demonstration of how a successful Australian company can develop and maintain export markets over a period of years,” said Mr Paterson.
The ceremony included a presentation by the port of barometers to Auspine, Marubeni and the ship’s Captain. In Japanese tradition, the Global Explorer brought a barrel of sake ashore to toast the milestone. The sake was supplied especially for the occasion by Marubeni in Japan.
Exports of woodchips and other products from the Green Triangle Region are set to increase dramatically over the coming five to ten years. The port’s capacity is currently being upgraded to handle the additional volumes.
The woodchip throughput alone is expected to grow by 3.5 million tonnes over existing volumes of 1.5 million tonnes.
The additional 3.5 million tonnes equates to around 75 extra ships through the Port each year.
Auspine, a subsidiary of Gunns Limited, is an integrated forestry company with manufacturing facilities in South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania. It manufactures and markets a wide range of timber products in Australia in addition to its export activities.
