Approval for Expanded Woodchip Facility Welcomed
The Port of Portland today welcomed the Victorian Government’s approval of the Port’s proposed new woodchip facilities.
“This will enable the Port to handle the growth in hardwood chips over the coming years, and deliver significant economic benefits to Portland and the Green Triangle Region.” said Port of Portland CEO, Scott Paterson.
“In particular, this will allow the Port to develop a storage facility that will be the largest of its kind in Australia.
“We’re making a major investment in this facility, which will be reflected in our woodchip throughput, which will grow by 3.5 million tonnes over existing volumes of 1.5 million tonnes.
“The additional 3.5 million tonnes equates to around 75 extra ships through the Port each year,” Mr Paterson said.
“The new port facilities will be developed to allow export market access for timber plantation companies as their plantations in the Green Triangle Region reach maturity over the next ten years.
Mr Paterson said he was particularly pleased with the local community’s input.
“Over the past 12 months, as part of the planning process, we consulted widely with the community and local stakeholders to refine our development plans. The community has been very supportive. So too the Glenelg Shire Council who unanimously agreed to the planning scheme change.
“The Department of Transport and Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development recognised this as a project of State significance, and as such have done much to facilitate the process.
“We’re also pleased that Minister Justin Madden has approved our Environmental Management Plan, which followed a rigorous investigation of the potential environmental impact of the development.
“Under this plan we will carry out ongoing monitoring and evaluation of noise, storm water quality, dust and traffic impacts, to ensure the community and the local environment is protected,” Mr Paterson said.
The Port will now work with timber companies and construction partners to begin planning for implementation during 2009.
