The Port of Portland turned 50 on 19 November 2010.

While the Port traces its history back to the 1800s, it only became a commercial, all weather port in 1960.

In 1945, the Victorian Government received a report from its Public Works Committee recommending that the Port be upgraded to help develop Western Victoria. The 'new' port was officially opened on Henty Day, 19 November 1960, by the Governor of Victoria, Sir Dallas Brooks.

Today the Port of Portland is the international gateway to the Green Triangle Region and is the only Victorian port that serves the needs of two states - Victoria and south-eastern South Australia.

The Port has always seen itself as part of the Portland community and it is fitting most of our celebrations will focus on our local community.

The celebrations included: 

• A School Art Competition held in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Portland.
• Afive-year sponsorship by the Port of Portland of the Portland 3 Bays Marathon.
• Free public screenings of the film, Construction of Portland Harbour – The Workers’ Story.
• A  fishing competition sponsored by the Port of Portland and Portland Bail & Tackle.
• An Open Air Concert, fireworks and children’s amusements on the foreshore.
• A Port Open Day.
• A Golden Anniversary Ball. 

We are proud of the role the Port has played over the past fifty years in the development of the region and in the local community.  

A special 50th year logo was developed to mark the occasion.
